Tour of Romandie 2018

Astana Pro Team continue their winning run

Astana Pro Team have continued their successful start to the 2018 season with victory in the Tour of Romandie on stages one and four.

The Kazakh team took a slightly unexpected win on stage one when Omar Fraile outsprinted Italian classics specialist Sonny Colbrelli. Despite the Italians strong sprint, he was unable to match Fraile, who timed his acceleration perfectly, coming off Colbrelli’s wheel to take the victory and the lead in the points classification.

Meanwhile, the in-form Dane Jakob Fuglsang took the teams second win of the race on stage four to Sion. The stage took in several categorised climbs before finally descending to the finish line, providing plenty of opportunities for riders to attack.

With the GC battle heating up and only two stages remaining many riders were keen to leave their mark on the race, but it would be Fuglsang who would come out on top. Whilst Bernal and Roglic were busy marking each other for the GC, Fuglsang sprang from the leading group of five riders with 16km remaining to take the win.

As well as taking the stage, Fuglsang also managed to jump up into the top ten on GC, eventually finishing 4th overall.

Both Fraile and Fuglsang won their stages using the Argon 18 Gallium Pro, which has seen multiple wins this season already, including the Amstel Gold Race, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and several stages at the Tour of the Alps.
